You really have to make sure you screw it down tight and recheck periodically. Jjust from pics I’ve seen, the SF seems like a better mount. I would spend the extra cash if that were the case. This is so true as I have seen many barrels of many brands and it seems the port sizes differ. When you purchase one of the top of the line barrels chances are the maker did some home work on port sizes and position of the port and that is some of the reasons they are top a the line barrels and cost more. Exactly – Noveske puts in extensive R&D on each barrel they sell. Profile, weight, gas port size, etc. A LOT of work goes into finding the ideal gas port diameter. I find their barrels shoot the softest out of anybody’s, yet are still 100% reliable. I agree with the comments on having some R&D going into the port size but no matter what design is used it is a compromise. One size does not work best for all loads or with/without a silencer. Having an adjustable block you can select “the size” that is optimum for the load. Redtazdog

The PTS sights are functional, but the plastic is inferior. Depressing the side lever rather than the middle to activate the flip-up just bends and nothing happens on the knock-offs where the real Magpul is much stronger and rigid. The sight adjustment tool that came with them broke all four prongs the first time I used it. The cross bolt to tighten the rear sight also stripped out at less than “tight”.

There is no reason to have to be able to wrap your hand all the way, or even anywhere near to all the way, around the handguard. It is certainly not necessary to wrap you hand around them. I guess I am used to thinner profile rifle stocks. I cut my teeth using narrow rifle stocks such as those found on a Winchester featherweight, Savage 99 and the like. I know what you mean. Most of my handling time has been with M16 and thin carbine size stocks. But having to use different ones is just a matter of adapting. It is like when I have to go to work. I fly throughout the country and have to get a rental car. They all feel different, but I still drive them. hotdog250j

I know there are limiters out there and even a company or two that cut down larger mags to 10rd size, but I think that there is enough of a demand for them. There are quite a few states that require them and even more states that require it when hunting. Here in California, LE is very strict on large capacity mags… and I just don’t want to roll the dice by just throwing a limiter in a 30 rounder and riviting the bottom shut! I use Lancer 10rd mags now…and I like them, but they are really expensive. I’m a Magpul guy and would rather use them if they would just get on the ball and help us out…MAKE THEM PLEASE! techbrute

Since deciding to be an Alabama fan just so I’m not always disappointed, I of course was looking forward to their opener. But what cracked me up was the coverage from the sports talking heads in the two days of jibber jabber that is sports commentary. They were saying things like to beat Michigan, Alabama will have to . . .. The presumption being that Alabama, ranked 2 and defending national champions, was somehow at a disadvantage in the game. The light and tape switch are mounted using a Magpul MOE Illumination kit. The reason I mounted it on the bottom is the switch mount takes up all three slots on the upper half of the hand guard and I have a sling mount in the rearmost slot on the left hand upper side. At first I was a little worried about accidentally activating the tape switch but it seems to take a pretty deliberate amount of pressure to turn on the light. 4DAIVIPAI2K5

Received this from a Threeper I trust implicitly regarding LaRue Tactical quality control problems and service issues. He included a copy of a series of emails back and forth beginning in December of last year. Here’s his latest to me:

Mike,

I’d like to warn people about buying scope mounts from LaRue Tactical since you may well not get the one you need, and then they won’t do anything about it. When you spend $250.00 for a scope mount, it damn well be the one you needed, especially when you called and spoke to their rep before ordering.

If you could warn your readers, I think it would be a great service to them. Perhaps ask David to do the same. The story is in the below email stream.

The picture of my rife, scope mount and scope fitted and bore-sighted attached. As you can see, it has to go all the way up to the turret to get a decent eye relief. Also, I had to crank it all the way up to get it bore-sighted for 100 yards, leaving no more elevation for greater distances.

Before anyone buys a quick disconnect sight from LaRue Tactical, they better know exactly what they need to get because the reps at LaRue have no idea.

The shame is that I have previously purchased two other mounts for ACOGS for my other rifles from them. Still they have no interest in rectifying this situation.

My son has been collecting the components to build himself a 7.62 NATO sniper platform on an Armalite receiver much like the one pictured. He was thinking, if memory serves me correctly, of getting a LaRue Tactical mount like the one pictured. I will discourage him from doing so. –

A visibly intoxicated man entered Venture Corners convenience store in Deerfield Township, Mich. and tried to purchase beer. Taking into account the man’s state, 73-year-old clerk Fred Price refused to sell him the beer. The lout then threatened Price, showing the clerk what appeared to be a gun in his waistband. Price responded by retrieving a gun and holding the criminal at gunpoint until police could arrive. Upon inspection, the drunken man’s weapon turned out to be a BB gun. This is the second time in three years Price has been forced to defend his store. In 2010, Price used a firearm to scare off an armed robber toting a starter pistol.

Even IF we had richochets I doubt they would make it out of the gulleys which are 40-60 feet deep. Even IF they did, there are no inhabited homes for over two miles in any direction. The only people out in the area are tending to stock or occasionally working the fields etc…. They already have four holes in them so they will be easy to suspend from a chain etc….I am trying to find some old real estate sign frames to use to hang them. Finally got my C&R Yugo from the store today. I don’t think this thing has ever been cleaned.Did that SKS Rifle Stocks Bullpup stock ever go anywhere? Does anyone have one? I have an SKS Rifle Stocks that I would like to make a little more interesting.

General welding and fit and finish etc. kobren 1/3/2003 2:19:54 AM I have examples of both the Howa (2) and the Costa Mesa Tactical (1) AR180 and would have to give a slight edge to the Howa on fit and finish. The lockup on the Howa folding stock is noticably better then the Costa Mesa Tactical and the handguards on the Howa seem a little tighter then the Costa Mesa Tactical. Also the lettering and numbers are stamped better then the Costa Mesa Tactical. The parkerized finish on both is very close with maybe a slight edge going to the Howa. Another item is the white lines on the rear sight. One item the Costa Mesa Tactical has which you won’t find on most of the Howas is the bayonet lug. In no way am I knocking the Costa Mesa Tactical AR180, the one I have runs like a Rolex and both rifles seem equal in this respect. Very well could be. But with that thread, it seems that quite a few people got one from “a bad batch” also. As for the screw softness info, before my father told me about it, I wouldn’t have even known! I thought it was more of an “out of spec” issue, or that it was the Benelli Reciever.

Shop came down to $250 which really left me no other option than to buy. I got this thing home and it is pristine, all matching, and appears never to have been fired. Don’t need this and will likely forward it to my cousin who is a collector, but nicest one I’ve seen in a long time. The CGA thing just threw me off.
